Craftsmanship with a Story

Rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, our collections reimagine centuries-old stencils, textile patterns, and artwork—thoughtfully adapted for modern living without diluting their essence.

Many designs begin with Edo-period (1603–1868) stencils, originally carved by artisans for dyeing kimonos. These stencils, now designated as Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan, are far more than templates; they’re testaments to patience and precision.

While some restoration is needed to adapt these stencils for modern use, we endeavor to preserve their hand-cut imperfections. Subtle irregularities—a slightly uneven line, an asymmetrical motif—are kept intact, embracing the marks of human craftsmanship over digital perfection. Most of our stencil-based products adhere to a two-color palette, a deliberate choice to honor the stencils’ history while highlighting their intricacy.

Other designs draw from archival Japanese textiles and artworks, reinterpreting motifs that have endured generations. Every pattern is chosen not for trends, but for its narrative and rarity.

Ethical Creation, Thoughtful Details

Quality is non-negotiable. We use premium, responsibly sourced materials and partner exclusively with workshops in the UK and Canada to ensure ethical production:

  • London Studio (England): Blankets, cushions, and towels are handmade by skilled artisans using EU-sourced linens and organic cotton.
  • Montreal Workshop (Canada): Totes and tumblers are crafted for durability, using recycled metals and locally sourced fabrics.

Every piece is made with care, never mass-produced.

Timelessness Over Trends

Oak Grove rejects disposable decor. Instead, we offer heirlooms: a blanket dyed with a 200-year-old floral motif, a tote bearing the marks of a craftsman’s chisel. These pieces age with character, blending into modern life while honoring their origins.

About the Founder

Hilary Johnson is the founder and designer behind Oak Grove. She holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies with a focus on Japan from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and has spent years studying Japanese language, culture, and history. She first traveled to Japan after her freshman year of college and has since returned nearly a dozen times, deepening her understanding of traditional crafts through firsthand experiences—indigo-dyeing in Tokushima, carving woodblock prints in Kobe, weaving on a loom in Kyoto, practicing shodō calligraphy in Hakodate... She resides in the Boston area and is always looking forward to her next trip.

Hilary’s appreciation for art, creativity, and craftsmanship started much earlier, growing up in communities that placed a strong, unwavering value on the arts and traditional craft. That foundation continues to shape her approach to Oak Grove.
